Basmati rice with Indian pantry ingredients including lentils, flour and chutney

Choosing basmati rice

Basmati is a long-grain aromatic rice used for everyday meals, pulao and biryani. Brand, ageing and cooking method affect fragrance and texture. A rice that is excellent for biryani may require a different water ratio from an everyday supermarket rice.

Everyday steamed rice

Rinse well and follow the pack guidance. Keep the method consistent before adjusting the water.

Biryani and pulao

Long, separate grains matter. Soaking and careful partial cooking can help, depending on the recipe.

Small households

A smaller quantity may stay fresher and is easier to store in a dry, sealed container.

Tourist kitchens

Choose enough for the planned meals rather than carrying an unfinished large bag after the trip.

Useful Indian pantry essentials

  • Atta or selected flour: used for roti and other breads; exact type matters.
  • Besan: chickpea flour used for pakoda, chilla and some batters.
  • Lentils and chickpeas: practical for dal, chana masala and vegetarian meals.
  • Ghee or cooking fat: selected recipes use it for aroma and richness.
  • Chutney and pickle: strong flavours mean a little can be enough.
  • Whole and ground spices: buy based on the dishes you actually plan to cook.

How much rice do you need?

For uncooked rice, 60–90 g per adult is a useful planning range when rice is served with curry or dal. Biryani portions and appetites can require more. Measure your usual portion once, then scale it for the group rather than relying on a large packet size.

Storage and food safety

  • Store dry goods sealed, cool and dry; Icelandic indoor humidity can still affect an open packet.
  • Label repacked items with the ingredient name and date.
  • Check manufacturer labels for allergens and preparation instructions.
  • Cool cooked rice quickly, refrigerate promptly and reheat safely; do not leave it at room temperature for long periods.

A sourcing service, not a full supermarket

We can help with selected ingredients and practical quantities, but stock and brands change. Indian Food Shop is a pre-order service. Please message before visiting so the item, price and pickup time can be confirmed.
